Development group poised to consider name change
Today, the board of directors for Leavenworth Area Development will vote on whether to rename the 25-year-old economic development organization.
The vote to change the group's moniker from LAD to Leavenworth County Development Corporation was scheduled to take place during a noon meeting at Riverfront Community Center in Leavenworth.
According to a resolution describing the name change, LAD officials "recognize the need for the organization to adopt a name that better describes the connection and service" it provides for businesses and municipalities in Leavenworth County.
The name change will also will make the group more recognizable to state, regional and national interests, the resolution says.
On Jan. 12, the board of directors voted, 11-6, to change the name. LAD director Lynn McClure said people unfamiliar with his group often believe, mistakenly, that it works solely on behalf of the city of Leavenworth.
Following last month's vote, McClure said changing the group's moniker is "a true sign that we're now countywide."
According to state statutes, another majority vote is required before officially changing the name.
