The Lansing High School Forensics team members aren't wasting a moment when they have the opportunity to perform.
The team split to compete at two tournaments Saturday, Feb. 18. LHS took first place at Sumner Academy in Kansas City, Kan., and third at Basehor-Linwood High School.
Students who place first or second in their event qualify for the Class 5A state championship tournament May 6 at Emporia High School.
LHS students who qualified Saturday for state were: Stefan Dumlao, second in both informative speaking and original oratory at Basehor; Monica Tate, first in serious solo acting at Basehor; Miranda Nichols, first in extemporaneous speaking at Sumner; Stephen Fischer, first in poetry and second in oration at Sumner; and Aaron Keeling and Samantha Mitchell, second in duet acting at Sumner.
The team will attend three more tournaments this week. Today, Feb. 23, some students will compete at the Kaw Valley League Championships at LHS while others travel to Bishop Seabury Academy in Lawrence. On Saturday, the team will compete at the Leavenworth High School Invitational Tournament.
