Jeff Shugart is an engineering technician for Fort Leavenworth who has lived in the area for over 22 years. He lived in Leavenworth until he and his wife were married 5 1/2 years ago, when they both moved to Lansing.
Since then, Jeff has gotten involved with the Lansing Lions and even served as the president for one year. He has enjoyed some of the speakers that the club has brought in.
"We've had some people who've been over in Baghdad that have talked, that's been kind of interesting," Shugart said. "They were stationed there and what they talked about was they weren't in heavy action, in fact some of them were protocol type deals where they were having heads of state come in and their job was to show them around and give them protection."
A graduate of the Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo, Iowa, Shugart has worked on some of the most recent projects for the fort, like the new warehouse and adding an elevator to Grand Hall.
Some of Shugart's favorite time however, is spent traveling with his wife. They have been to Europe, the Greek Isles and Turkey in addition to various places in the United States. Greece made a special impression on Shugart, and he relived some of the excitement when places he and his wife had visited were aired on television.
"It was interesting when they held the Olympics there, they showed some of the sites that we went to - like they had the ending of the marathon at the original theater that they built," Shugart said. "That was interesting to see that."
Shugart isn't sure where his adventures will lead to next, but he has at least one idea.
"Maybe the southwest area of the United States," he said. "Maybe the Grand Canyon."
