Library panel works on plans for upcoming vote on bonds
The collection at Basehor Community Library contains approximately 27,000 items. According to the Public Library Standards of Kansas, the local collection should be nearly twice that size.
And so, the campaign slogan that will be used by library supporters during the next few weeks -- "you deserve more" -- is on target, they say.
The slogan was unveiled during a meeting Monday night, as library supporters gathered to work on plans for $2.99 million bond issue.
Library director Carla Kaiser said the slogan is an appropriate way to describe the upcoming bond issue election, set for Feb. 28.
"It's not just the number of books, but it's the depth of information you'll have access to," Kaiser said. She added, "Anyone living in the library district boundaries are already paying for a library. ... For a very little more, you can have much, much more value for your dollar."
Money from an approved bond issue would pay for a new library on 158th Street, between Parallel Road and U.S. Highway 24-40. The new building would include 13,400 square feet. This plan is a paired-down version of a bond issue voters rejected in 2004.
Library officials said their bond counsel is still finalizing numbers on what the tax burden for an approved bond issue would be to patrons. However, it appears, Kaiser said, that an approved bond issue would raise patrons' mill levy by less than 1 mill. A mill is $1 in taxes for every $1,000 of assessed property valuation.
The current library mill levy is 3.239 mills.
"For less than a mill you could have a whole lot more," Kaiser said. "You're getting a better value for your tax dollar. We certainly believe that's true."
