Lansing soccer lands five on All-Region squad
It is little coincidence that the Lansing High girls soccer team placed a team record five players on the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association All-Region teams the same year the Lions played their toughest schedule.
By facing top-tier teams such as Blue Valley West, Shawnee Heights and Olathe Northwest, Lansing received greater exposure and likely earned a bit more respect from coaches in the region, LHS coach Rob Elkins said.
"The other coaches knew who we played," Elkins said of his club's numerous state-ranked opponents. "It was fairly visible."
Junior midfielder Bianca Manago, junior defender Abby Hauver and sophomore goalkeeper Katie Nietzke made the first team. Junior defender Elizabeth Cristiano and sophomore midfielder Rachel Pride made the second team.
Previously Lansing never had placed more than two players on the All-Region team. Two Lions made it last year when Manago was on the first team and 2005 senior Kendra Sickinger earned second team honors.
Lansing, Hayden, Seaman, Shawnee Heights and Topeka West each placed three players on the first team.
