Former USM coach pleads guilty

June 15, 2006

A former University of St. Mary football coach pleaded guilty last week to trafficking in child pornography.

According to the U.S. attorney's office, Scott Frear, 42, Leavenworth, entered the plea last Friday during a hearing before U.S. District Court Judge Kathryn Vratil in Kansas City, Kan. Frear formerly coached football at the Leavenworth university.

"Mr. Frear used an Internet chat room to strike up a relationship with what he though was a 14-year-old boy," said U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren. "In fact, Mr. Frear was making sexual advances and sending child pornography over the Internet to a police detective in New Hampshire."

In his plea, Frear admitted he corresponded during July 2005 with a person whose screen name was "bradnh14" in the chat room of a group hosted by that caters to adults interested in sex with or between male children, according to Melgren's office. A detective who was posing as "bradnh14" had posted a profile with a photo of himself when he was 13 or 14 years old. During the conversation over the Internet, "bradnh14" told Frear he was 14 and a resident of New Hampshire. Frear replied that he was 28 years old, a teacher and a resident of Kansas.

Frear, who faces five to 20 years in federal prison, will be sentenced at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 28.
