Three Basehor-Linwood choirs hit the road next week for Dallas
Seventy-one students, 16 adult sponsors and one accompanist will take off for Dallas next Thursday at 4:30 a.m.
Their destination: the Southwest Invitational, a competitive music festival that will feature choirs from a four-state area.
This is the first time Wendi Bogard, Basehor-Linwood High School choir director, has taken a BLHS choir out of state to perform.
"Last year at the state large group contest, all three choirs received I ratings," said Bogard. "I was very proud of them and wanted to travel with all three groups."
Bogard will be directing two girls choirs and one mixed choir at the Southwest Invitational. The group has a busy agenda that includes tours of the Oklahoma City National Memorial, the Dallas World Aquarium and the Texas School Book Depository Museum. The trip also will feature dinner at Hard Rock Cafe in Dallas and a day at Six Flags Over Texas.
And the group will perform on Friday at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, the home of the Dallas Symphony.
Their work will be critiqued by three judges who are music educators from California. The Basehor-Linwood musicians also will participate in a workshop led by one of the judges. The choirs will be performing selections that they will also perform at state music festivals.
"This experience will help to further prepare the students for the large group music festival in April," said Bogard. "I've visited with colleagues who have taken groups and felt like it was a successful experience."
The young musicians' excitement about the upcoming trip is evident by walking into her classroom.
"The students have started a countdown to Dallas," Bogard said.
