Theater group seeks ‘dream’ posters

March 30, 2006

Students who can express the themes of "A Raisin in the Sun" in a picture or poster have a chance to win $25 from Art In Motion, a local theater group.

In connection with its upcoming performance of "A Raisin in the Sun," AIM is putting on a poster contest for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

AIM is looking for a poster that best shows a student's aspirations. In the play, the Younger family had a dream to move from a poor neighborhood to an upper-middle class neighborhood. Suggested themes for students to explore in their poster include: What do you want to do in life? Where do you want to go in life? Where do you want to live? Students may use any art medium - paint, crayons, etc. Entries should be turned in to the student's teacher by April 15.

Prizes will be awarded in two age categories, kindergarten through fourth grade and fifth through eighth grade. The top student in each category will receive $25, and ribbons will be awarded for second- and third-place entries.

All participants' posters will be displayed and prizes will be awarded on opening night of the play, 7 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Nettie Hartnett Elementary School in Leavenworth. The play also will be performed at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 29, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 30. All performances will be at Nettie Hartnett, 1000 Third Ave., Leavenworth.

Call Joyce Williams, play director, at 727-3085 for more information.
