Winter weather leads to Friday school closings
For the second day in a row Lansing schools will be closed Friday because of severe winter weather.
Schools were closed Thursday because of icy road conditions after a wintry storm dumped sleet and freezing rain over Leavenworth County and the surrounding area. Those same conditions delayed delivery of Thursday's edition of The Current.
Although Main Street was cleared Thursday, side streets still were sloppy and slick. In addition, snow is expected to fall Thursday evening through Friday morning. The anticipated bad weather led officials to call off Friday classes.
According to the Lansing School District web site, "all evening activities and practices are cancelled when schools are closed due to icy road conditions." Lansing was slated to open its basketball season Friday night at home against Bonner Springs. Bonner Springs also has called off Friday classes.
