Cross country runners collect medals at Pleasant Ridge
Jaqua breaks record for third time
Lansing High freshman Lauren Jaqua continued her assault on the school record board Thursday at the Pleasant Ridge Cross Country Invitational.
Jaqua already set the four-kilometer girls record twice prior to the race. She broke it again Thursday by placing second in 16:37.6. Her previous record was 16:40, which she set Sept. 28 at the Lansing Invitational.
Jylian Saloma of Maur Hill Prep was the girls champion in 15:47.
The top 25 runners in the race medaled, and Jaqua wasn't the lone Lansing representative on the awards stand. Freshman Abbey Lozenski placed 10th in 17:58, senior Lori Flippo was 12th in 18:19 and junior Emilee Taylor was 22nd in 20:18.
In the junior varsity girls race, Sandy Collier placed seventh in 20:25, Andrea Shanks was ninth in 20:34 and McKenna Hall was 16th in 22:54. The top 10 JV runners medaled.
All five LHS boys in the varsity five-kilometer race medaled. Freshman Brandon Craig was eighth in 20:17, junior Griffin Davis was ninth in 20:23, sophomore Wes Appleget placed 12th in 20:41, sophomore Greg Bremser was 16th in 21:13 and senior Brandon Mills was 22nd in 21:54. The boys' times were a bit skewed, however, because the course was roughly 600 meters too long.
The LHS boys placed second in the team standings out of seven teams. Lansing had 62 points. It trailed only Christ Prep, which had 34.
Trenton Dorf was the junior varsity champion in 22:08. Joe Bagby placed fourth in 23:04, Alex Twitchel was seventh in 24:14 and Russell Buchanan was 24th in 29:38.
Lansing next competes at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Kaw Valley League meet.
