Bobcats football report: Week 8
“To be honest I will use this tape to look at individual efforts and exchange tapes with Piper. Then I’ll throw this tape in the trash.” — Steve Hopkins, BLHS football coach
Sophomore running back Chandler Schaake rushed 28 times for 104 yards.
Freshman quarterback Brandon Leppke was 1 of 8 passing for nine yards and two interceptions, but several of his passes were dropped by Bobcats' receivers.
Tyler Miles rushed nine times for 47 yards and David Theodoroff ran four times for 29 yards.
Schaake led the Bobcats in tackles with nine.
Kevin Marshall and Scott Ogilvie each had one sack. Ogilvie's sack pushed Ward back 15 yards and forced the Cyclones' only punt.
The snap bounced and the Ward punter had to fall on it at his own 13-yard line, which set up Basehor-Linwood's only score.
One-on-one with a star
In the second quarter Schaake found himself one-on-one with Chris Wing, who simply outran him on his way to a 57-yard touchdown catch that made it 21-0.
"I got toasted," Schaake said, but then added that some of the credit should go to Ward's junior quarterback, John Oropeza. "That's the first QB I've seen that doesn't kind of loft the ball (on deep passes). They're a good tandem."
Wing caught three balls for 102 yards and two touchdowns. He now has 13 receiving touchdowns in eight games this season.
Bruce Tyner (cut hand) and Jacob Schierbaum (strained neck) didn't play against Ward, but should be available Thursday against Piper. Miles hurt his elbow in Friday's game, but returned for limited carries in the second half.
