Lansing places second at KVL Freshman Tourney
The Lansing High freshman volleyball team placed second Saturday at the Kaw Valley League Freshman Tournament at Perry-Lecompton High School.
LHS (9-4-1) placed second in its pool with wins against Bishop Ward and Piper, a tie with Santa Fe Trail and a loss to Mill Valley. Lansing then rolled to a 25-14, 25-20 victory against Perry-Lecompton in the semifinals. That set up a rematch with Mill Valley in the championship match.
Mill Valley held off Lansing in the finals with a 25-21, 25-17 victory. The Lions held a 20-12 lead in game one, but couldn't put the game away. The Jaguars carried the momentum from their game-one rally into game two and put the match away.
LHS coach Rhonda Lang said the Lions received strong production from Kristen Gould and Krystena McCrudden at the middle hitter position. Right-side hitters Bianca Castello, Cierra Slagg, Brittany Smith and Kelsey Scharnhorst also had big performances in the tournament. In addition, Lang praised setters Anisha Patel and Madison Brandt for leading the offense and back row players Jade Simmons, Heather Callahan and Mary Lou Martin for their solid defensive play.
