Reserve goalkeeper remains hot
Hanna Bates would be hard-pressed to duplicate the ease of this shutout.
Basehor-Linwood's goalie only faced four shot attempts as the Lady Bobcats hammered Immaculata, 4-0, Tuesday afternoon.
Bates has done an admirable job of subbing for starter Kori Roberts. Roberts is currently sidelined with mono.
How big is the effect of the loss of the team's goalie?
"It's pretty big, because we have grown accustomed to having Kori back there the last couple years," BLHS coach Kevin Vincent said. "Hanna is very capable, however."
Vincent said Roberts is expected to miss a couple of weeks but the prognosis won't be known until further consultation with a doctor.
Bates is now 2-1-1 in the goal. The Lady 'Cats are 3-1-1 overall.
"In the games Hanna has played, she has done an excellent job," Vincent said. "We started off the season well."
Shanna Couch began the scoring for the Lady 'Cats when she sailed a free kick over the goaltenders outstretched hands.
Jessica Smith and Audrey Brock added goals to push the lead to 3-0. Smith put an exclamation mark at the end with a breakaway goal.
Smith now has 10 goals through five games. Couch added two assists. She has seven assists on the season.
"She really distributed the ball well tonight," Vincent said. "She just has great vision of the field and knows where to put the ball. She sets everyone else up for success. She knows how to get open so she can distribute the ball."
The defensive performance was stifling and IMac was never able to get in a rhythm on offense.
"As a team we did a good job of stopping the flow of their attacks," Vincent said. "Our midfield and defense was able to back up our offense very well."
Vincent is happy with his team's progress. Despite quick start, he still believes there are areas that can be improved upon.
"We have made a lot of progress," Vincent said. "I think we have a long way to go to be where we are capable of being. As a team we are playing more cohesive as a group. We have had some victories over good teams and we have several challenging opponents coming up on the schedule."
