Greenway Auction takes Vegas theme
Leavenworth Catholic Schools are going to send the grand prize-winner of the 29th annual Greenway Auction to Sin City this year.
The Las Vegas-themed auction on Saturday, April 14, will raise money for Immaculata High School and Xavier Elementary. Money raised this year will help capital improvements such as a roof for Immaculata High School, said Marti Dupuis, development director of the auction.
"We're really excited that we just completed a regional study of all the parishes and schools and whether they would close, merge or relocate," she said. "Now that that's complete and Immaculata is going to stay open in its current location, it's time to look at improvements on that building."
The auction has increased its net yield by about $165,000 over the past several years,
"It's a great cycle that's got a lot of momentum," she said.
There are 67 live auction items this year, she said, including a basketball signed by this year's University of Kansas basketball team and artwork by local artist Michael Young.
Dupuis attributes much of the success to a supportive local business community and corporate sponsorship. This years sponsors include Saint John Hospital, McDonalds and Luxury and Imports.
Grade school students get involved as well, Dupuis said. Students write letters to celebrities or sports teams asking for items such as signed memorabilia or photographs to sell in the auction. This year they received autographed pictures from Martina McBride and the band Pearl Jam.
Alumnae offer support to the auction too. One alumnus is a veterinarian, Depuis said. They send pet items such as tick and flea repellent and dog food, Dupuis said.
"It's quite an operation," Dupuis said. "It's so completely dependent on the hundreds of volunteers who do so much work behind the scenes, that's the best part of this, the volunteers who help."
The grand prize-winner will receive a three-day trip to Vegas, a stay at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino and airfare through Southwest airlines.
Tickets will be sold for the chance to win $500 to $2,500 in the Big Green Giveaway.
The event will be at McGilley Field House at the University of Saint Mary. Doors open at 5 p.m., which is when the silent-auction bidding begins. A dinner buffet begins at 5:30 and the live auction begins at 8 p.m.
The Lansing community is home to several teachers and more than 70 students from Xavier and Immaculata.
