August 30, 2007

A health fair is coming next month to Leavenworth County that will cater to a specific age group.

The Fit And Nifty Over 50 Health Fair, sponsored by the Council on Aging, will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Riverfront Community Center Gymnasium, 123 S. Esplanade.

Patty Willmeth with the Council on Aging said several health providers would be on hand for the fair, which will offer many services for free.

"It's unusual to have this in Leavenworth County," Willmeth said. "We hope to have great participation."

Free screenings will be offered for glaucoma, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, skin and ear. Massages will be given, as will nutritional counseling. And, impairment goggles will be available to show residents the simulation of being over-medicated or intoxicated. Firefighters also will be on hand, as will

official with information on a shingles vaccine.

A stroke detection station also will be available. It will be the only booth that requires a fee for its service.

Sponsors for the event include St. John's Hospital, Sunshine Home Health and Associates in Family Health Care.
