Bremser, Meara pace LHS cross country at Tonganoxie Quad
Tonganoxie The Tonganoxie High boys and girls cross country teams defended their home turf with first-place team finishes Thursday afternoon at the Tonganoxie Quadrangular, but the Lansing High squads had plenty to feel good about, too.
The LHS boys placed third as a team despite holding out their top seven runners so they can compete later this season at the Rim Rock Farm Invitational. Junior Greg Bremser raced to a 10th-place finish in 20:05. He was followed close behind by 11th-place finisher Grant Hinckley, a first-year runner, who covered the 3.1-mile course in 20:20. Junior Michael Hornick was 16th in 21:16; junior A.J. Glowacki was 18th in 21:35; senior Alex Twitchel finished 22nd in 24:09; and senior Russell Buchanan was 26th in 26:10.
Nick Anning of Kansas City Christian was the boys' champion in 17:28.
The Lansing varsity girls also held out their top seven for Rim Rock, so they didn't field a full squad on Thursday. Sophomore Kate Meara, a first-year runner, was Lansing's top performer as she placed eighth in the four-kilometer race in 18:54. Junior Emilee Taylor was 16th in 21:09; sophomore Katherine Borderud was 21st in 23:49; and junior McKenna Hall was 22nd in 24:06.
Tonganoxie senior Christy Weller was the meet champion in 17:11.
Lansing next competes at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, when it travels to the Girard Invitational.
