JV girls escape in OT
Katie Cristiano wasn't the leading scorer for the Lansing High junior varsity girls, but the sophomore forward turned in some of the biggest plays at crucial moments Friday night against Basehor-Linwood.
Cristiano pulled down three rebounds and sank a free throw during overtime as Lansing rallied for a 44-41 victory at Johnsmeyer Gymnasium.
Cristiano's free throw was her only point of the game, but it iced a victory that was in many ways improbable. Lansing led throughout the first half and took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Basehor stole the momentum with an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter and had LHS reeling.
A lay-in by Alexis Ellis with 61 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 39-39 and a pair of free throws by Abbey Lozenski with 14 seconds left put Lansing on top. Basehor scored at the buzzer, however, and forced overtime.
The Bobcats never scored in the extra four-minute period, but Ellis scored on a layup and Cristiano sank a late free throw to cap the victory.
Lozenski led Lansing with 13 points, Katelyn Griffen had 11, Ellis scored eight, Kari Kelly had six, Chelsea Weeks and Amy Briggs had two apiece and Katie Smith and Cristiano each had one.
Lansing now is 7-3.
