Letter: Let’s get this one right

February 7, 2007

To the Editor:
At the Basehor City Council meeting last evening, I was heartened to hear, during the discussion of whether the Glenwood Estates subdivision and Glenwood Elementary School should be annexed and accepted into the city treatment system, some council members begin to recognize the idea that a regional solution is the only real solution to waste water treatment in Basehor.
Mike Spickelmier of Leavenworth County Public Works referred to the Basehor Waste Water Treatment Plant as a "regional" facility. To hear a county employee refer to the plant in those terms was a surprise. I have regularly attended council meetings, planning commission meetings, serve on the 24/40 Citizens Advisory Committee and made most of the County Planning Department's monthly planning seminars over the last couple of years, but this is the first time I've heard our plant referred to like that.
This raises all sorts of questions which must be addressed before we commit millions of additional dollars to the existing Basehor plant. Should there be a regional sewer authority for the county or part of it? How should the Wolf Creek basin be addressed? Should Bonner Springs handle Wolf Creek? Should Basehor be the regional provider? How should Tonganoxie and or Linwood be addressed?
We can't answer these questions by ourselves. It's going to take a joint effort of Basehor, state, county and our adjacent cities. Regardless of the answers, Basehor cannot by itself be the regional provider without significant assistance and financial contribution by both county and state.
Our future hangs precariously on Basehor getting this one right!
