KCKCC seeks nominations for Women’s Day celebration

January 4, 2007

Nominations are being accepted through Jan. 19 for recognition at the ninth annual International Women's Day Celebration at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

The kickoff event for KCKCC's celebration of Women's History Month, the annual luncheon will be held March 1.

The criteria by which the honorees will be selected are twofold: how the work of the nominee has "moved history forward" or how the nominee has addressed the issues of her generation and/or future generations.

"The public is encouraged to nominate women representing a variety of ethnicities and generations, young women as well as older women," said Karalin Alsdurf, co-chairwoman of the Intercultural Center event with Marisa Gray.

Alsdurf said the 2007 theme, "Generations of Women Moving History Forward," presents special opportunities to highlight the contribution of all women and celebrate the courage, determination and steadfastness needed to move history.

"The purpose of this event is to acknowledge all women and to honor women from the communities of Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties for their outstanding contributions that have helped 'move history forward,' " Alsdurf said. "This theme recognizes the wisdom and tenacity of the generations of women who have come before us and those who will follow."

The 2006 honorees included Georgia Buchanan, president and CEO of All-Pro Construction; Nancy Carry, retired Board of Public Utilities carpenter and member of the KCKCC board of trustees; Command Sgt. Maj. Jana Harrison, Kansas Army National Guard; Carolyn King, director of the Heart of America Indian Center; Anita Martinez, El Centro Family Intervention Service; and Jill Shackelford, superintendent of Kansas City, Kan., public schools.
