John and Phyllis Gable celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Jan. 14.

They were married Jan. 14, 1967, at First United Methodist Church in Leavenworth; attendants were Margaret Mutz VerMulm and Quinton Church.

John worked at North American Aviation on the Apollo spacecraft until drafted into the Army. He was stationed at Fort Leavenworth in the Aviation Department and the MP Company, where he met Phyllis, who was a civilian employee at Fort Leavenworth. Upon his discharge, John went to work as a civilian and was a locksmith until his retirement in 1993. Phyllis retired from the fort in 1992.

Together they have two children, Rhonda (Keith) Underwood and John "Tony" Gable. Their grandchildren are Dena Underwood, Abby Underwood, Chuck Gable and Ashely Gable. They have an extended family to include Angela Demencius and Anne deShazo and grandchildren Tom Kohl, Joe Kohl and Alanda Kohl, and Kyle and Hannah Demencius.

Phyllis and John celebrated their anniversary in Washington, D.C. They plan a trip to Hawaii later in the year.
