Senior citizens have spelling bees, too

July 5, 2007

The Salina Senior Center and City of Salina Parks and Recreation 50 Plus program are co-sponsoring the first Senior Citizens State Wide Spelling Bee later this year.

The bee, which is open to any Kansas resident who is 50 years or older by Oct. 1, 2007, will be at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 11 at the Bicentennial Center in Salina.

There is a $5 entry fee payable in advance. Entry forms may be obtained on line at salhelp.org/aging/spellingbee, or by calling (785) 827-9818. Entry forms are due by Sept. 14 to the Salina Senior Center 245 North Ninth, Salina 67401.

The grand prize will be a trip for two to the National Senior Citizens Spelling Bee competition in Cheyenne, Wyo., in June 2008, where the Kansas winner will compete against contestants from other states.
