Milnark earns all-metro honors
Chalk up another honor for Lansing High freshman softball player Rachel Milnark.
After being named to the All-Kaw Valley League second team as a utility player last month and a first-team All-State utility player last week, Milnark now has added the title of All-Metro to her rapidly growing resume.
The Kansas City Star named Milnark to its All-Metro second-team squad as a first baseman.
Milnark was the top offensive player on a Lansing squad that placed third in the league and advanced to the regional championship game.
Statistically speaking, the honor comes as little surprise considering Milnark was the top hitter in the KVL this season. She batted .481 with 39 hits, 29 RBI, 12 doubles, three triples and four home runs. She also had a .873 slugging percentage.
Making the squad as a first baseman may be a bit surprising, however, considering her primary positions were shortstop and pitcher. Milnark played catcher for one game, and she played first base for a handful of games after breaking a finger early in the season.
The Star's softball player of the year award was given to Olathe East senior pitcher Erranne Daugharthy. She led the Hawks to the Class 6A state championship this season with a 10-1 record and a 0.05 ERA.
If Daugharthy's name rings a bell, that's because she played at St. Thomas Aquinas last year and pitched against Lansing in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament. Aquinas claimed a 1-0 victory in eight innings in that game and went on to place second at state. That's when Daugharthy bolted St. Thomas Aquinas for the Olathe East, a softball power three miles down the road from her former school.
