Riptides start with a splash
The Leavenworth Riptides swim club made plenty of waves on Wednesday, June 6, as it collected 28 first-place finishes against Turner and Lake Quivira at Turner High School.
Seven Riptides led the way with multiple first-place finishes, but nobody had a bigger day than Clint Gersema and Lauren Jaqua. Gersema highlighted the 18-and-under division with four individual first-place finishes and also anchored two relay teams to gold-medal finishes. Meanwhile, Jaqua collected five individual titles and helped her 14-and-under medley relay team to a second-place finish.
Other multi-event winners were Jimmy Bormolini, Jack Reilly, MeKayla DePaolis and Haven Stutz. Bormolini won the butterfly and individual medley in the 12-and-under division; Reilly was the 10-and-under champion in the butterfly and breaststroke; DePaolis was the 8-and-under winner in the freestyle and individual medley; Stutz was the top finisher in the backstroke and breaststroke.
Other Riptide individual race winners were Alissa McCarter in the 6-and-under backstroke, Jack Bresser in the 10-and-under backstroke, Dee Dee Tisdel in the 10-and-under breaststroke, Meg Lee in the 12-and-under butterfly and Tyler Graves in the 18-and-under butterfly.
The Riptides also had five relay teams turn in top performances. The 8-and-under girls medley relay team of Stutz, DePaolis, Lindsay Hattock and Sara LaMoe placed first; the 10-and-under boys freestyle relay team of Matt Holden, Scott Hattock, Reilly and Bresser won their race; the 10-and-under boys medley relay team of Bresser, Reilly, Alex Elliott and Max Campbell placed first; the 18-and-under co-ed medley relay team of Graves, Ravyn Teeters, Tess Courrier and Gersema won; the 18-and-under co-ed freestyle relay team of Courrier, Teeters, Graves and Gersema won gold.
In addition, the Riptides had 16 runner-up finishes and 19 third-place finishes.
