3rd burglary in 3 months reported at Linwood school

March 14, 2007

The joint Linwood Elementary School and Basehor-Linwood Middle School building was burglarized this past weekend for the third time in three months.

Superintendent Bob Albers said a motion detector was repositioned to accommodate people who use the facility legally for after-hours functions and failed to detect the suspects, who pried open a door to the multipurpose room located on the south side of the building.

"It was discovered this morning when the custodians came in," Albers told school board members at Monday night's meeting.

A stainless steel roll-up kitchen door also was pried open as well as a lock box and filing cabinet door in the food service office, according to a Leavenworth County Sheriff's report.

Albers said school employees believe only small change was taken from a desk drawer, but repairing damage to the doors may be costly. The sheriff's report showed an estimated loss of $600.

Several hundred dollars in cash and personal checks were stolen from the food service office at the same building last December when intruders pried open a hallway door. A few weeks later, while students were on winter break, someone entered the BLMS principal's office and stole an electronic organizer.

Albers said the district would continue to update the security system and officials now keep money in a more secure location within the school.

"Protection One is going to come out to see how we can beef up that security system," he said.
