Bust dedication set at fort

March 22, 2007

A bust in the likeness of Lt. Henry O. Flipper, the first black to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy, will be dedicated at Fort Leavenworth's Buffalo Soldier Monument at 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 30.

Flipper was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1877 and served with the 10th Cavalry Regiment of Buffalo Soldiers. His duty on the frontier included scouting as well as serving as post engineer surveyor and construction supervisor, post adjutant, acting assistant and post quartermaster, and commissary officer.

Lt. Gen. Franklin Hagenbeck, commandant of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, is guest speaker for the ceremony.

The bust's sculptor, Eddie Dixon, also sculpted the fort's Buffalo Monument statue.
