Just call him ‘coach’

March 29, 2007

If your son or daughter plays for a Lansing Parks and Recreation team, chances are you've met Bryan Pettis or his wife, Deena.

Pettis has served as football commissioner for parks and recreation since 2004 and also coaches youth soccer, softball and basketball teams. His wife runs the cheerleading program for the city as well.

"Between the two of us, we're involved in every sport in some way," Pettis said.

All three of Pettis' daughters play sports. Pettis is coaching his youngest girl's soccer team currently. His other two daughters will play softball for eight weeks this summer. In addition, they all cheerlead and attend dance classes three times a week.

For Pettis, an avid sportsman, living with four females can keep him on his toes at times.

"I need to buy an outhouse," Pettis said. "I can't ever get in the bathroom, because they're always primping their hair. I've got to come to work for some testosterone."

Pettis works as a production manager at Heatron, Inc., an industrial supply company in Lansing. He also takes classes at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

"If I'm not at work, with my kids or at school, I'm probably home sleeping," Pettis said.

His passion, undoubtedly, is and always has been keeping involved in sports. Pettis, a graduate of Lansing High in 1993, played nose tackle and offensive guard in high school and spent a semester as a walk-on on the University of Kansas football team.

"My dad coached us all through the years," Pettis said. "So I know how much it means to the kids. I don't have any sons, so coaching was one way for me to get involved with the boys, too."
