Jayhawks coming to camp at BLHS
This winter, the play of athletes such as Austin Knipp, Tanner Swafford and Chandler Schaake put the Basehor-Linwood High School basketball program back on the map.
This summer, even bigger basketball names will likely do the same.
On June 4 and 5, Washburn University basketball coach Bob Chipman will bring a cast of college basketball all stars to BLHS for a two-day camp that will emphasize the fundamentals and skills it takes to play basketball at an elite level.
The camp is open to all students ages 7 to 17 and will cost $70 per section. The June 4 camp is open to all girls and boys ages 7 and 8. The June 5 camp is open to boys age 9 and up.
The cost includes a basketball, a camp T-Shirt and an opportunity to win prizes.
Of course, the biggest prize of all comes in the form of stepping onto the same court as University of Kansas stars Brandon Rush, Julian Wright, Mario Chalmers, Sasha Kaun, Russell Robinson and Darrell Arthur. KU women's standout Danielle McCray will also attend the camp, as will K-State's Bill Walker.
"We were thrilled when they contacted us about using our venue for this camp," BLHS athletic director Joe Keeler said. "We're proud of our facility and we're excited to bring kids from all over to Basehor-Linwood."
Despite his enthusiasm for the publicity for the school, Keeler did not lose site of the most exciting part about the camp.
"It's a pretty cool deal to have those guys come to our school," Keeler said. "People are going to want to come watch these guys."
Keeler said camp officials told him that a tournament pitting the campers against the college stars will be played on June 5. That tournament will be open to the public. Further details were not yet available.
Enrollment forms are available at BLHS as well as the rest of the schools in the Basehor-Linwood district.
