Missouri team wins barbecue title
Bubba and Jeff bested the field at Lansing's Brew, Blues and Bar-B-Q competition.
Bubba and Jeff's BBQ, consisting of partners Eric "Bubba" Burkhart and Jeff Spurgeon, ended up taking overall champion honors at the competition, which was Friday and Saturday in conjunction with the annual Lansing DAZE festival.
Overall, 30 teams competed for the grand champion honors, which included cash, prizes and an automatic invitation to the American Royal International Invitational later this year in Kansas City, Mo.
The Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned the competition.
Jeff and Bubba, of Eldon, Mo., said they learned the art of their unique form of barbecuing in trashcans from a man called Snail.
"He's the godfather of barbecue to us," Burkhart said.
This was the first time the duo had won a barbecue competition.
"I'm so excited, my heart's pounding," Spurgeon said.
Burkhart said the team isn't about the winning, though taking the title of grand champion was great.
"We're out there to have fun, first and foremost," Burkhart said.
Another recent addition to barbecuing ended up bringing home the People's Choice award.
Doug Hudson, Lansing, said he was new to barbecuing and decided to enter the contest to see how he would do.
"This was local and we thought we should try," he said.
Hudson said he thought he won the People's Choice award because of his sauce, which he described as sweet and spicy.
He received a plaque and knife-set for the award and said he definitely plans to continue barbecuing.
