To the editor:
While on the council I had the pleasure of working with Mayor Ken Bernard, a man completely dedicated to serving the citizens of Lansing. I found him easy to work with but no pushover. I also found him open to new ideas and willing to try something different. Like the time I pressed for the congressional earmark for DeSoto Road. I'm not sure the city staff believed it was worth its time and effort and the council was completely noncommittal but Mayor Bernard was on board quickly and we went to Washington, D.C, and made the case for our city, and it paid off.
The mayor has been active with the League of Kansas Municipalities here at home and with the National League of Cities nationally. Both have provided valuable insights into what works and what doesn't work for cities our size. Just look around Lansing and you'll see progress everywhere. None of this development happens by chance. Mayors lead, city administrators run day-to-day operations and council members set policy and provide oversight. But the key is leadership, and Mayor Bernard has led well. Congratulations Mayor Ken Bernard for being selected Kansas Mayor of Year. Thank you for a job well done.
