AARP to offer seniors’ defensive driving course

May 24, 2007

Drivers 50 years old and older can refine their driving skills and learn safe, defensive driving techniques in an eight-hour refresher course offered at St. John Medical Plaza.

The AARP Driver Safety course will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, and Friday, June 15, in the Education Center at St. John Medical Plaza, 3550 S. Fourth St., Leavenworth. An hour has been allotted on both of these days for lunch at the participant's expense.

The AARP Driver Safety Program is designed to meet the specific needs of older drivers. Through discussion, audiovisuals and written material, the course covers age related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road, local driving problems and license renewal requirements.

The course teaches preventive measures to use when driving that can save lives.

Ron Cranor, Leavenworth County undersheriff, will teach the course. All participants who attend and participate in both sessions will receive certification.

Participants who take this course will also be eligible for a discount on their auto insurance mandated by the state of Kansas.

The cost of the program is $10. Preregistration is required. All checks should be made payable to AARP and brought to the first class.

For registration information for the AARP Driver Safety Program, please call (913) 281-7777 or (800) 281-7777.
