— Evelyn May Young



Evelyn May Young, 87, of Basehor, formerly of Fontana, Kan., died Nov. 6, 2007, at the Tonganoxie Nursing Center.

She was born Feb. 19, 1920, at Fontana, Kan., the daughter of George Henry and Kate (Moore) Brocker. She graduated from Fontana High School with the Class of 1937.

She married Maurice Wayne Young on Oct. 6, 1939, at Paola, Kan. They became the parents of two sons. They lived in the Kansas City and Basehor areas most of their married life.

Mrs. Young worked in the accounting department of A & P Grocers in Kansas City for 20 years from 1957 until 1977.

Mrs. Young was a wonderful cook who enjoyed sharing her homemade goods with family and friends. At her 55th class reunion, she was given the teacher's bell from Fontana High School for having never missed a day of school in 12 years. She attended her 70th class reunion in May of this year.

After retirement, the Youngs moved to Adrian, Mo., where they lived for 15 years.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, who died May 14, 2005; her parents, and her sister, Helen Ruth Watson. She is survived by her two sons, Keith Wayne Young and Steven Maurice Young, both of Basehor; her twin sister, Ethel Young of Adrian, Mo.; four grandchildren, Kurt Young of Tonganoxie, Kathy Kehr of Wichita, Kan.; Richard Young of Lawrence; and Christopher Young of Kansas City, Mo.; and seven great-grandchildren, Dylan and Colton Young; Caroline, Christian and Vanessa Kehr; and Ella and William Young.

Services were Monday at the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Visitation before the service Monday. Burial was in the Miami Memorial Gardens, Paola, Kan. Pallbearers were Phil Young, Forrest Young, Leland Moore, Kurt Young, William Kehr, Richard Young, and Chris Young. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Fontana Methodist Church.
