A sport for every season

November 21, 2007

Having just put dozens of helmets and shoulder pads in storage for the rest of the year, Bernd Ingram will now get out the basketballs and his coaching whistle as he gears up for the next Parks and Recreation season.

Ingram, the 2007 Parks and Recreation football commissioner, has coached four youth sports for the past five years soccer, baseball, football and basketball on a volunteer basis.

This was his first year at the helm of the football league.

"So this year's been a busy year for me," Ingram said.

He said he was extremely pleased with all of Lansing's youth football players on six tackle teams and four flag teams that suited up this fall to play in the Northeast Kansas Athletic Association's Youth Football League.

"It's a good teaching tool," Ingram said of the Parks and Recreation program, "as well as an opportunity to play and have fun.

"It's so exciting to see a kid grow and learn and maybe do something he couldn't have done before."

Ingram credited the Parks and Recreation administrator staff, volunteers and the parents of the 115-odd Lansing youths who played football this year for making it such a successful season.

Another place Lansing youths might regularly see Ingram is at Lansing Middle School, where he deejays various activities' fundraisers.

Ingram, who deejayed in college and occasionally works weddings and birthday parties, said he began getting involved at the middle school when his daughter began school there.

"I was looking at the deejays coming in playing R-rated music at what should be a PG environment," Ingram said. " : I wanted to make sure the kids get some halfway decent music."
