Freshmen wrestlers ready for high school debut
Eight freshmen will make their prep debut Saturday when the Lansing High wrestling team opens its season at the Kaw Valley League Duel Tournament at Mill Valley.
Don't expect the young Lions to be sneaking up on anybody, though. That's not going to happen.
"What I'm really excited to see is for us to get out there and turn some heads with some new faces," LHS coach Ron Averill said. "Unfortunately, our youth, most of them aren't coming in totally unknown. We won't be able to truly blindside some people like a lot of times you can with freshmen."
No, nobody's going to overlook Lansing's talent-heavy freshmen. Not when two of them have been projected to be state medalists on multiple threads on the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association's message boards since before the season began.
Still, Averill admits he's anxious to see how the freshmen handle their first tournament. That includes Brett Brown (103 pounds), Garrett Hinckley (112), Spencer Blew (125), Dillon Scanlon (130), Tyler Terron (140), Tyler Baughman (145), Nathan Wessel (171) and heavyweight Zach Hammer.
Also competing for LHS will be senior Dennis Wood (119), last year's state runner-up at 103 pounds; senior Nick Flynn (152), the state-runner up last year at 145; junior Grant Hinckley (160), a fourth-place medalist at that weight last year; junior Wes Appleget (135); junior Brian Snodgrass (189); and junior Tyler Strouhal (215).
