Icy forecast causes parade cancellation
The icy weather forecast for this weekend already is responsible for one cancellation.
The Main Street Holiday Lighted Parade scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1, in downtown Leavenworth has been canceled and will not be rescheduled. Megan Scheidt, assistant to the Leavenworth city manager, made the announcement Friday afternoon in an e-mail to media outlets.
In addition, the Leavenworth Mayor's Tree Lighting, originally scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1, has been rescheduled to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, Scheidt said. If there is inclement weather next weekend, the Mayor's Tree Lighting will be inside in the gymnasium of the Riverfront Community Center.
As if early afternoon Friday, officials in Lansing said the Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony, scheduled for 6 .m. Sunday at Lansing Community Center, would go on as planned.
The National Weather Service has issued a freezing rain advisory from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday.
Ice accumulations around a tenth of an inch are possible across the greater Kansas City area, including Lansing, starting during the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning. Temperatures are expected to warm above the freezing mark by midmorning with the freezing rain changing over to rain. Temperatures will continue to climb into the 40s by afternoon and melt any ice that remains.
A freezing rain advisory means that periods of freezing rain or freezing drizzle will cause travel difficulties. Forecasters are urging drivers to be prepared for slippery roads and to slow down and use caution while driving.
