Letter: Another chance

October 3, 2007

To the Editor:

A school bond election is again before the voters of the Basehor-Linwood School District that is incredibly important to the future of all our students. We, the voters, have another chance to do what is best for the future of our students.

Growth is occurring rapidly in our district. With the influx of new residents comes the addition of new students to our schools. Several of our facilities are presently to and beyond capacity. Currently, our middle school and sixth grade center are at the point of extreme discomfort. Basehor Elementary and Glenwood Ridge are also feeling the pain of overcrowding. Linwood Elementary no longer has any room to expand. The middle school has, out of need, expanded into five of their classrooms.

The bond issue before the voters is a smart one. It adds the facilities and remodeling needed to keep up with our growing district. The proposal of a new configured middle school, new intermediate facility for Basehor Elementary, additional classrooms at Glenwood Ridge and remodeling at Linwood Elementary is exactly what is needed for the present and future of our district and not extravagant.

The addition of a soccer field at Basehor-Linwood High School is also needed from a safety standpoint for not only our students, but also visiting students to our district. This addition will ensure students' safety and a minimal cost to patrons.

Our students deserve the best. They deserve the best in curriculum programs, teachers and facilities. As a teacher and parents of children attending this great district, we urge all voters to support this bond issue. We all need to say "yes" to our students and their futures.

Lynn A. Sweeney
