County Bee makes changes

October 11, 2007

Changes in the Kansas State Spelling Bee will now require all winners from Leavenworth County to travel to Great Bend to compete for a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

After 53 years of sponsoring the Kansas State Spelling Bee, the Topeka Capital-Journal has gone to a regional format involving only the 26 counties comprising its readership area. The Great Bend Tribune volunteered to serve as another regional bee site for remaining Kansas counties.

For Leavenworth County contestants to advance to the Great Bend regional bee, the winner's school must have paid a $99 fee to Scripps, the sponsor of the national bee, by Oct. 15. Parents are encouraged to contact their children's schools to see if the registration fee has been paid.

The Leavenworth County Bee is open to all students in grades 5 through 8 who attend a Leavenworth County school. The county bee is scheduled for Feb. 1, 2008.
