Basehor-Linwood wins for seniors
Senior Night provided no discernible challenge for Basehor-Linwood, as they easily dispatched three opponents Tuesday night. The Lady Bobcats beat Wyandotte (25-9, 25-4), Harmon (25-10, 25-11) and Bonner Springs (25-6, 25-18).
Seniors were escorted out with their parents and then individually recognized by coach Tammy Zydlo. They were given flowers and a scrapbook page filled with team pictures. Zydlo's song for the team, "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts, was played.
Seniors recognized were Cassie Lombardino, Michelle Chrisman, Elyse Douglas, Ashley Jeannin, Chelsey Patton, Brooke Sanders, and Jennifer Sirridge.
"This is a very special group of seniors," Zydlo said. "They are very good students besides being multi-sport athletes. I wish each one of these girls the very best life has to offer. I am going to miss them."
Douglas returned quickly from a bruised ankle sustained last Saturday.
"I think she has bounced back very well," Zydlo said. "I think Elyse really wants to play. It's getting closer to the end of the season, and I think she will do what she can so she can play."
Zydlo said she was pleased with the teams serving. The Lady 'Cats recorded 12 serving aces against Wyandotte and five against both Harmon and Bonner.
Chelsey Patton signed with Central Missouri State earlier this week to play softball, and then recorded 13 kills on Tuesday.
"I thought Chelsey Patton played really well tonight," Zydlo said. "She passed really well, too."
Cassie Lombardino had 21 kills.
"Cassie was able to put the ball down on the floor, and that is her role," Zydlo said. "She is doing what we need from her."
The 3-0 day improved the team's record to 21-14. Zydlo lauded the team at the end of the night for breaking the 20-win plateau.
"It was a team goal this year, and certainly one of mine," Zydlo said. "I told them that they should be proud of the fact that they had more than 20 wins this year--which hasn't been done for a very long time in Basehor-Linwood volleyball history. They should be proud, but we need to keep pushing."
The Lady 'Cats now shift their focus to Sub-State, which will take place on Saturday in Tonganoxie. BLHS will face a 4A bracket that includes Atchison, Hiawatha, Holton, Piper, Jefferson West, Perry Lecompton and Tonganoxie.
"I don't think we see ourselves as underdogs, I think we see ourselves capable of anything," Zydlo said. "I think our team is a team that other teams look at and say, 'It could be them.' If we play our volleyball, I certainly think we can win Sub-State. I think any team at this time of the year is beatable if they don't have the effort. We have the athletes to do this--they just need to believe it. I'm counting on my seniors not wanting our seasons to end just yet.
"Why can't we win Sub-State?"
