Substate volleyball at a glance

October 18, 2007

The Lansing High volleyball team is 3-0 in tournament play this season with titles at the Lansing Invitational, Louisburg Tournament and the Anderson County-Garnett Tournament.

Tournament No. 4 takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Seaman High School in Topeka. It's the Class 5A substate tournament, and a berth in the state tournament is on the line.

Lansing, ranked No. 4 in the state and 36-2 overall, earned the No. 1 seed. Its first-round opponent will be eighth-seed Highland Park (6-30) on the north court. A win in that match would send the Lions to the substate finals at 4 p.m. against the winner of the 3 p.m. match between fourth-seed Schlagle (9-18) and fifth-seed KC-Washington (8-21).

The other substate features second-seed Topeka Seaman (31-7) against seventh-seed Bonner Springs (7-29) in a 2 p.m. match on the south court. The other semifinal will feature third-seed Shawnee Heights (19-16) and sixth-seed Topeka West (8-28) at 3 p.m. A likely meeting of Seaman and Heights will take place in the finals at 4 p.m. on the south court.

The winners of each of the finals matches will advance to the Class 5A state tournament. It begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka and concludes on Saturday, Oct. 27.

SCOUTING THE STATE

Perhaps the most intriguing 5A substate tournament will take place at Turner High School. That substate includes three of the top five ranked teams in the state with No. 1 Bishop Miege, No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas and No. 5 Mill Valley. Miege (36-1) earned the more favorable draw. It will play Wyandotte (0-29) in the first round and then get the winner of Sumner Academy (24-10) and Turner (21-16) in the finals.

The other bracket will pit Aquinas (33-2) against Harmon (7-18) in one first round matchup and Mill Valley (29-6) and Gardner-Edgerton (19-18) in the other. The winners will play for a state berth.

Shifting to the Newton substate, No. 3-ranked Newton (36-2) will play Hays (5-26) in the first round. The winner of that match will meet the winner of McPherson (23-15) and Salina South (19-17) in the finals. The other Newton bracket pits Liberal (31-6) and Hutchinson (13-20) in one first-round matchup and Great Bend (23-10) and Salina Central (14-21) in the other. The winners will play for a spot at state.

The final substate takes place at Winfield. Top-seed Wichita Bishop Carroll (23-10) plays winless Wichita West (0-34) in the first round. A likely Carroll victory would lead to a spot in the finals against the winner of the Valley Center (20-14) match with Pittsburg (18-16).

The other half of the Winfield substate features second-seed Emporia (25-13) playing Winfield (2-30) in one first-round match and Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel (23-13) and Arkansas City (5-26) in the other. The winners will meet in the finals.
