KVL Football Report: Week Two

September 9, 2007

If the unusual plot twists of week one of the Kaw Valley League football season were surprising, then week two was absolutely nuts.

After manhandling defending league champion Tonganoxie a week earlier, Lansing collapsed in almost all facets on Friday night and was routed by Perry-Lecompton, 42-13. As a result, the Kaws find themselves as one of three remaining unbeatens in the league. Of course, this should come as no surprise considering Perry has been one of the league's top teams during the past two seasons.

What is a bit of a surprise, however, is that Mill Valley and Bonner Springs also are atop the standings. Mill Valley entered the season with lots of question marks after losing standout running back Justin Woods to Kansas State. Another Woods - junior Nick Woods - has proven to fill the void just fine through two weeks of action. Bonner Springs has been one of the league's cellar dwellers in recent years, though, and after a strong showing in districts last year the Braves rode a wave of confidence into 2007. The result has been a 26-6 victory over Basehor-Linwood in week one and a 25-14 come-from-behind victory over Piper on Friday night.

There is the potential for separation within the league this week. Two teams with 1-1 records - Lansing and Santa Fe Trail - square off. In addition, Mill Valley will play Piper (1-1), Perry-Lecompton travels to Basehor-Linwood (0-2) and Bonner Springs faces Tonganoxie (0-2).
