Basehor

Allen Everett Goens, 72, Basehor, died at his home on Sept. 20, 2007. He had suffered for almost two years from Mesothelioma. He was born in Kansas City, Kan., on Jan. 4, 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett Goens and Theresa (Sappington) Goens Roach, and his stepfather, Clint Roach. He leaves behind his wife, Judy, to whom he was married for 45 years. Also surviving are his daughter, Lisa Anne Brown; his son, Michael Allen Goens; and another daughter, Lesley Ellen McAfee. He was called Grampy by his two grandchildren, Monica and Samuel. He is also leaves a sister, Patricia Rogers.

After graduating from Basehor High School in 1952, he entered the workforce at Trans World Airlines, then was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960. After his duty, he continued his work at TWA as a senior sheet metal fabricator for 42 years, retiring in 1994. For the last six years, he worked as a security guard at Kansas Speedway. In his limited free time away from his volunteer work, he loved to restore vintage cars and trucks, and could fix virtually anything with or without wheels.

He served on the Basehor City Council from 1976 to 1979 and was its president in 1979, and also as mayor of Basehor from 1979 to 1981. He had also served asw the chairman of Consolidated Rural Water District No. 1. He was a member of the Basehor Lions Club, a longtime member and officer in the Basehor Booster Club, and was named Basehor Citizen of the Year in 1997. He also coached Little League baseball and volunteered at high school football games and for any other community and emergency service that needed his help.

Visitation and rosary were Sept. 23 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Basehor. Services were held at Holy Angels Church on Sept. 24. Burial followed at Holy Angels Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Basehor Park Association or Holy Angels Church building fund.
