No surprise: LHS to stay in 5A
Lansing High's athletics teams will compete in Class 5A postseason activities again this year.
The Kansas State High School Activities Association released its new classifications Thursday, Sept. 20. Based on the enrollment of high school sophomores, juniors and seniors, Lansing's enrollment is listed as 570.
These classifications relate to all sports except football.
Hutchinson is the largest school in Class 5A with an enrollment of 1,027; Sumner Academy is the smallest school with 519. Bonner Springs matched LHS with 570 students. Besides Sumner, the only schools smaller than Lansing are Pittsburg (553) and Valley Center (561).
The football classifications, which are set every other year to establish postseason districts, were released for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years. Those enrollment numbers are based on freshmen, sophomores and juniors only. The LHS football team will remain in Class 5A, too. With an enrollment of 594, Lansing is tied with Valley Center as the sixth-smallest school out of 32. Ottawa is the smallest 5A football school with 553. Emporia is the largest with 1,051.
