Basehor resident purchases winning ticket
Casey's General Store provided a smidge of luck for Basehor resident John Mallon.
Make that 5,000 smidges.
Mallon purchased five Change of Luck scratch tickets Tuesday, but it turned out he only needed one.
He won a $5,000 top prize on the first ticket he scratched.
"I was driving and scratching my tickets at the same time, which probably wasn't the smartest thing to do," Mallon said. "When I realized I'd won $5,000, I had to pull over. My first reaction was, no, this can't be."
Mallon decided to turn around and head back to the store where he purchased his winning ticket.
"I wanted to make sure I had a winner," Mallon said. "I've never won anything like this before and I've been playing twice a week for years."
Meanwhile, Mallon's wife Debbie was returning home from work when she passed him on the road.
"I thought he was going to the bank," Debbie said. "I had no idea he had won $5,000. Since it was so hot, I went home and took a shower. By the time I was done, I heard a bunch of commotion. I asked what was going on and he told me he'd won $5,000. I thought there must be some sort of catch."
Mallon and his wife, who have been married 25 years, have three children. They plan to pay bills with their prize money.
"This came at a great time," Mallon said. "August is always a tough month for us with school starting and tags and taxes due on our vehicles."
The winning ticket was purchased at the Basehor Casey's General Store,15441 Wolf Creek Blvd.
