Volunteer Opportunities

August 6, 2008

United Way of Wyandotte County has listed the following volunteer opportunities:

Volunteers are needed for the Bishop Ward High School's "Extreme Clean." The building interior underwent a facelift with freshly painted walls, and the floors refinished, trophy cases painted, new lockers installed and now the building needs to be readied for the start of school. Volunteers are needed for Saturdays, Aug. 9 16. Work will be done from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each of these days. Even one hour of work would be a big help. If you are interested in volunteering and helping ready the building for the first day of classes, contact the school at

As the school year approaches, school children need mentors and tutors. Just one hour a week with a caring adult can make a world of positive difference in the life of a child. YouthFriends will provide training to all mentors and tutors. YouthFriends is active in most school districts throughout the metro area. For more information contact YouthFriends at 816-842-7082 or email them at

Celebrating Healthy Families Health Focus will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4. Volunteers are needed to help with all aspects of this event, which will be at 1021 Pacific in Kansas City, Kan., the Global Distribution Center for Heart to Heart. Volunteers are needed to help set up beginning at 7 the morning of the event, to help with crowd control, registration, interpreting (Spanish/English), clean-up to name a few of the many volunteer opportunities. For more information or to volunteer, contact Francesca at 913-831-2200 or at hispaniccoalition

Bridging the Gap offers a number of volunteer opportunities for the volunteer who wants to make a contribution to "greening" of the community. Training will be provided to all volunteer speakers. There are volunteers needed to work with the Tree Alliance to plant and care for trees in the urban area. Training is provided. Volunteers can also help with the community recycling centers. There is always the need for office support including phone bank and data entry. For more information or to volunteer check out
