Turtles to raise funds
The Leavenworth County Infant-Toddler Services Tiny-K program will hold its fifth annual Turbo Turtle Trek. More than 1,000 numbered, rubber Turbo Turtles will slide into the Tonganoxie Swimming Pool at 10 a.m. Aug. 23.
The countywide event will raise funds for babies with special needs or developmental delays. The Tiny-K program provides therapy services to children from newborns to 3-year-olds in Leavenworth County. The services include, but are not limited to, physical, speech-language and occupational therapies, early childhood special education, and social work. These services are at no cost to the families.
Turbo Turtles can be adopted for $5 from 5 to 9 p.m. each day during the Leavenworth County Fair. Look for the "Adopt A Turtle Here" sign. The turtles can also be adopted until Aug. 20 at First State Bank & Trust locations in Basehor, Lawrence and Tonganoxie, Clearwater Pool and Spas, 901 S. Fourth St., Leavenworth, and Nurturing Families Inc., 613 Holiday Plaza, Lansing. Remaining turtles will be available for adoption from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. race day. All of the funds raised stay in Leavenworth County. Prizes will be awarded to at least the top 30 finishers. For more information, call (913) 651-1000, ext. 108.
