Boyda announces student nominees
Congresswoman Nancy Boyda announced students nominated for the Second District of Kansas to the United States Service Academies for the Class of 2013.
"These students have gone above and beyond to demonstrate incredible strengths in academic studies, leadership in extracurricular activities, a commitment to civic duty and a good strong moral character," Boyda said. "They have the qualities that will ensure their success both as students and officers in our military. I am sincerely proud to know, that if appointed to the academies, they will be honorable representatives of the State of Kansas. I offer my congratulations to these students and their families and wish them the best in all of their future endeavors."
As a Member of Congress, Representative Boyda has the privilege to nominate students who reside within the Second District to the U.S. Air Force, Military, Naval and Merchant Marine Academies. To earn this nomination, the students went through a long application process and were interviewed by the Second District of Kansas Academy Nomination Selection Board. This group is made up of members of the Second District who have strong backgrounds in educational, military and leadership roles and many of which are Academy alumni.
The Selection Board Members and Congresswoman Boyda have selected the following local students for this year's nominations for the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.:
• Eric Budy of Basehor, senior at St. James Academy
• Brian Snodgrass of Leavenworth, senior at Lansing High School
United States Military Academy at West Point, New York
• Doug Rosendahl of Leavenworth, Kansas State University Army ROTC Cadet
• Justin Verde of Lansing, senior at Leavenworth High School
A Congressional Nomination does not guarantee a student an appointment to an academy, but serves as a crucial aspect of the application process. Now, the academies must determine which students will receive the appointments for next year, information that is expected to be announced this coming spring.
