Symon Seaton wins regionals
Basehor-Linwood wrestler Symon Seaton smiled when he was asked about his goals for the rest of the season at the Kaw Valley League wrestling tournament two weeks ago.
"Win state," he said. "That is my goal.
Seaton took the next step toward that accomplishment during the Class 4A regional competition at Perry-Lecompton on Saturday by winning the regional title in the 112-pound weight class.
He defeated Logan Singular of Clay Center 4-3 in the championship match of the tournament.
Seaton started the tournament by winning his first match over Nick Coffman of Piper by pin fall. He earned an 8-3 decision over Kane Lovvorn in the semifinal match.
Seaton is one of two Basehor-Linwood wrestlers who will wrestle in the state tournament in Salina.
Mike Torrez qualified for the Class 4A State Wrestling tournament this weekend by placing third at the the regional tournament.
Torrez defeated Malachi Scott of Wamego 7-1 in the consolation-finals, a rematch of a first-round bout between the two wrestlers.
Torrez won the first match 7-6. He lost in a second round match to Skyler Goepfert of Marysville and then dropped down into the backside of the bracket.
From there, he defeated Kevin Licharowicz of Concordia by pin fall. The win ensured that he was going to the state tournament.
The state wrestling tournament begins at 9 a.m. Friday in Salina and will continue through Saturday.
Basehor-Linwood finished 13th out of 14 schools with a total of 41 points.
