Chiefs season warrants answers

Kansas City Chiefs fans deserve to hear from Clark Hunt on the state of the franchise. It is Jan. 3, 2008 and fans have just watched their beloved franchise go 4-12. They watched Arrowhead Stadium go from the loudest stadium in the NFL to a half-empty bowl in the second half of games. TV ratings dwindled. Tickets became less than a commodity.

Bonner Springs to honor legend
Coaching wrestling pioneer will be honored before championship rounds at Dick Burns Classic

Dick Burns will return to the gymnasium where he introduced wrestling to Bonner Springs on Saturday. He will be honored with a plaque for his contributions to wrestling and will see familiar faces during the ceremony. Jess Buck wrestled for Burns in the 1970s.

Basehor-Linwood coach Mike McBride hopes 2008 is the year his team breaks through and reaches the Class 4A Boys State State Tournament. On Dec. 31, he merged his personal New Year’s resolution with his team’s goal. “I have lost five different districts or substate games, counting last year, either in overtime or by three or less points,” McBride said. “My resolution is to get over the top and stop losing those close games - getting to state. We have the team to do it.”

My athletic career ended five years ago. Since I graduated high school I have not participated in any organized sport, succumbing instead to the sedentary life of a future sports journalist. For one month every year since I started college at the University of Kansas, however, that changes. I am again an athlete. I’m talking about winter break in my hometown of Brainerd, Minn. I compete voraciously with friends; not in front of crowds or for trophies. Rather, this competition stems from boredom and leads to bragging rights.
