Library starts new year with new events calendar
Mark your calendars for the new year. We are planning many great programs and events and hope you will be a part of them.
Story Time is at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday. Story Time includes two or three stories along with games, crafts or other activities, based upon a weekly theme.
The Lansing Library offers four seasonal reading programs. "Springo," March 1-31, is a reading bingo game that will take you to all areas of the library to explore new books and offer great prizes. This year's summer reading program, "Catch the Reading Bug," will begin in May and continue through the end of July and will offer many exciting activities including the Sizzlin' Summer Program Series. In September, we offer Family Reading Month, a program that encourages families to read together daily. Our winter reading program runs from mid-November through the end of January, so there is still time to participate in this year's program.
Family Night will be Thursday, Jan. 10. We will be celebrating the library's 10th anniversary with L. Frank Baum, author of "The Wizard of Oz" presented by Fred Krebs in conjunction with the Kansas Humanities Council. This program begins at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public. We hope everyone will come out and help us celebrate our milestone.
February Family Night will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 and will feature Book Bingo and prizes from the winter reading program. Spring Family Night dates will be Tuesday, March 18 and Tuesday, April 15. April 13-19 is National Library Week, and we will have events planned for each day during that week. Tuesday, April 1, we will be introducing the 2009 William Allen White Book Award nominees and voting on this year's list. This program will be at 4 p.m. and will be for youths in third through eighth grades.
May 12-18 is National Children's Book Week and our Family Night for the month of May will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 13. We will be kicking off our summer reading program with our registration celebration. We will also be celebrating "Kansas Reads to Preschoolers" during that event. Summer Family Night events will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, and Tuesday, July 15
Our end-of-summer prize distribution will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. This will be an exciting event. The annual Scholastic Book Fair will be Aug. 26-30, during library hours. September Family Night will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, and will feature family fun and games. We will award the prizes for Family Reading Month at Family Night at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14. The annual Spooky Center will be Saturday, Oct. 25.
Registration for our winter reading program will begin during Family Night at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18. Our final event of 2008 will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16.
It's going to be an exciting year at the library, so mark your calendars now. Happy New Year!
Join us in a walk down the yellow brick road as we celebrate the library's 10th anniversary at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10. In cooperation with the Kansas Humanities Council's History Alive Program, Lansing Community Library presents L. Frank Baum, author of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Frederick A. Krebs will present the life and adventures of L. Frank Baum, in character, during the program.
After the program, he will take questions as the author, then step out of character and take questions as himself. Refreshments will be served following the program. This program is free of charge and open to the public.
Lansing Community Library's hours of operation are: 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
