KU deserved higher ranking in final polls
January 16, 2008
Again, congratulations is in order to Kansas University Football coach Mark Mangino who recently was named coach of the year by the National College Coaches Association. Mangino has already received many such awards and it would have been nice if Kansas could have moved up in the ranks with their BCS Orange Bowl victory. Kansas which finished with a 12-1- record had the best record of any team in the BCS Bowls. Kansas won the Orange Bowl and was expected to move up a couple of notches but didn’t. One of the reasons cited was that the Jawhawks lost to Missouri in the regular season but using that same criteria of head to head competition Oklahoma who defeated Missouri twice during the season and didn’t advance in the rankings.

Basehor-Linwood post players lead teams
January 16, 2008
If the Basehor-Linwood basketball teams are to make a run in this year’s state basketball playoffs, it will most likely be a result of stellar interior play. With the female duo of Cassie Lombardino and Courtney Hooks, and the male trio of Tanner Swafford, Scott Ogilvie and Jacob Schierbaum, both teams are in good hands. Swafford and Lombardino are established Bobcat stars. The emergence of the other three players have given credence to their respective team’s postseason dreams. Schierbaum’s improvement, in particular, has given the Bobcats a secondary scoring option to take pressure off Swafford. The 6‘7” senior averaged six points and seven rebounds per game last year. He has improved those numbers to 10.5 and 7.8 per game this year.

January 16, 2008
The Basehor-Linwood Bobcat Classic Wrestling tournament was bigger than last weekend as the field expanded from 27 to 30 teams. Following last season, more teams wanted to enter what is regarded as an in-season showcase of top wrestlers from around the state of Kansas. Goddard won the tournament and Andale finished in second place. Garden City placed third and Shawnee Mission East finished in fourth place. The tournament seemed to run smoothly with wrestlers who have state experience competing in every weight class. “I was very pleased,” Basehor-Linwood athletic director Joe Keeler said. “It was an extremely competitive field. I was very happy with the sportsmanship from all the teams. It went off smoothly. That is a testament to the help and people that help us run the tournament.”
