Blues, zydeco to fill city park for series’ second performance
The Basehor Community Library staff hopes to pack Basehor City Park again for the second performance in the Summer Concerts in the Park series on Friday, July 11.
Lawrence native Billy Ebeling along with The Late For Dinner Band and special guest Dave Slaven will share their blues and zydeco sounds with the audience.
Ebeling has performed in Basehor recently at Holy-Field Vineyard and Winery and has regular gigs at Helen's Hilltop near Tonganoxie.
"We've been in the area playing as The Late For Dinner Band for about 10 years," Ebeling said. "I've been full time since 1985, so I do about four or five shows a week."
Along with local concerts, Ebeling and his band mates have traveled around the world to build up a fan base from Australia and New Zealand to Europe. They've enjoyed several positive reviews, award nominations and CD releases as well.
"We're nominated again for the Best Blues Band in Kansas City from The Pitch," Ebeling said, referring to The Pitch's annual "Best of Kansas City" awards.
Ebeling is self-taught on a variety of instruments including the guitar, banjo, piano and accordion. Slaven will be chiming in with some vocals and harmonica for Friday night's performance. While most of the band's selections are original, Ebeling said it's not uncommon for them to perform a familiar tune here and there.
"It's mainly original, but we might throw something in that people might recognize just to get them dancing," he said. "It should be a fun show and appeal to a wide variety of age groups."
According to Basehor Community Library's assistant director Jenne Laytham, last month's show was a hit with the community so guests are advised to bring lawn chairs and blankets and arrive a little bit early. The Basehor Veterans of Foreign Wars will be there offering concessions prior to and during the show. The park will be hopping from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
"The last one was really good," Laytham said. "The parking lot was full and there were a lot of people there. It's just a really good venue."
